The impact of engineered products is a topic of concern in society. Product impact may fall under the categories of economic, environmental or social impact, with the last category defined as the effect of a product on the day-to-day life of people. Design teams lack sufficient tools to estimate the social impact of products, and the combined impacts of economic, environmental and social impacts for the products they are designing. This paper aims to provide a framework for the estimation of product impact during product design. To estimate product impact, models of both the product and society are required. This framework integrates models of the product, scenario, society and impact into an agent-based model to estimate product impact. Although this paper demonstrates the framework using only social impact, the framework can also be applied to economic or environmental impacts individually or all three concurrently. Agent-based modelling has been used previously for product adoption models, but it has not been extended to estimate product impact. Having tools for impact estimation allows for optimising the product design parameters to increase the potential positive impact and reduce potential negative impact.

The impact of products is becoming a topic of concern in society. Product impact may fall under the categories of economic, environmental, or social impact and is defined by the effect of a product on day-to-day life. Design teams lack sufficient tools to predict the impact of products they are designing. In this paper we present a framework for the prediction of product impact during product design. This framework integrates models of the product, scenario, society, and impact into an agent-based model to predict product impact. Although this paper focuses on social impact, the framework can also be applied to economic or environmental impacts. An illustration of using the framework is also presented. Agent-based modeling has been used previously for adoption models, but it has not been extended to predict product impact. Having tools for impact prediction allows for optimizing the product design parameters to increase potential positive impact and reduce potential negative impact.

This study presents enhanced surveillance data from 2004 to 2018 for all community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) specimens collected in Western Australia (WA), and describes the changing epidemiology over this period. A total of 57 557 cases were reviewed. Annual incidence rates increased from 86.2 cases per 100 000 population to 245.6 per 100 000 population (IRR = 2.9, CI95 2.7–3.0). The proportion of isolates carrying Panton–Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-associated genes increased from 3.4% to 59.8% (χ2 test for trend 7021.9, P < 0.001). The emergence of PVL-positive, ‘Queensland CA-MRSA’ (ST93-IV) and ‘WA 121’ (ST5-IV) accounted for the majority of increases in CA-MRSA across the study period. It is unclear why some clones are more prolific in certain regions. In WA, CA-MRSA rates increase as indices of temperature and humidity increase after controlling for socioeconomic disadvantage. We suggest climatic conditions may contribute to transmission, along with other socio-behavioural factors. A better understanding of the ability for certain clones to form ecological niches and cause outbreaks is required.

Background
Silver nitrate cautery and bipolar electrocautery are commonly used in the treatment of epistaxis. Currently, there are no recommendations on optimum contact times or power for nasal cautery. ENT consultant practice in the UK has not previously been evaluated.
MethodsThis study examined the burn depth associated with silver nitrate (75 per cent concentration) cautery and bipolar electrocautery on porcine septum samples, using varying contact times and power. ENT consultants completed a survey evaluating their practice.
Results and conclusionENT consultant practice of nasal cautery was shown to vary widely. Silver nitrate cautery with a contact time of less than 30 seconds does not cause a full thickness burn. The findings lend some support to bilateral cauterisation with silver nitrate. Bipolar electrocautery should be set at lower than 10 W and with a contact time of less than 4 seconds to reduce the risk of complications associated with a full thickness burn.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria exposed a colonial-era settlement at LaSoye on the Caribbean island of Dominica. Evidence suggests that this was a seventeenth- to eighteenth-century Dutch trading factory built over an earlier Kalinago settlement, and a place of early interaction between Indigenous peoples and Europeans.

The achievement of high propelling nozzle performance in supersonic flight is vital to the success of any aircraft designed to cruise supersonically for prolonged periods. For such projects, the payload fraction is small compared with subsonic aircraft, and the ratio of gross to net thrust is high. As a result, the penalty in range/payload performance for a shortfall in nozzle gross thrust efficiency is inevitably severe.

The evidence underpinning the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) is overwhelming. As the emphasis shifts more towards interventions and the translational strategies for disease prevention, it is important to capitalize on collaboration and knowledge sharing to maximize opportunities for discovery and replication. DOHaD meetings are facilitating this interaction. However, strategies to perpetuate focussed discussions and collaborations around and between conferences are more likely to facilitate the development of DOHaD research. For this reason, the DOHaD Society of Australia and New Zealand (DOHaD ANZ) has initiated themed Working Groups, which convened at the 2014–2015 conferences. This report introduces the DOHaD ANZ Working Groups and summarizes their plans and activities. One of the first Working Groups to form was the ActEarly birth cohort group, which is moving towards more translational goals. Reflecting growing emphasis on the impact of early life biodiversity – even before birth – we also have a Working Group titled Infection, inflammation and the microbiome. We have several Working Groups exploring other major non-cancerous disease outcomes over the lifespan, including Brain, behaviour and development and Obesity, cardiovascular and metabolic health. The Epigenetics and Animal Models Working Groups cut across all these areas and seeks to ensure interaction between researchers. Finally, we have a group focussed on ‘Translation, policy and communication’ which focusses on how we can best take the evidence we produce into the community to effect change. By coordinating and perpetuating DOHaD discussions in this way we aim to enhance DOHaD research in our region.

A 21-year-old woman receiving prolonged high dosage glucocorticoids developed spinal cord compression due to excessive accumulation of epidural fat. Computerized tomographic scanning confirmed the diagnosis and revealed a peculiar pattern of spinal cord displacement which we believe to be unique to compression by fat. Laminectomy did not afford relief, possibly because of prolonged neural compression or because of compression at a higher spinal level. Although an unusual complication of Cushing’s syndrome, epidural lipomatosis should be considered when such a patient develops symptoms of spinal cord or cauda equina compression.

In traditional transit timing variations (TTVs) analysis of multi-planetary systems, the individual TTVs are first derived from transit fitting and later modelled using n-body dynamic simulations to constrain planetary masses. We show that fitting simultaneously the transit light curves with the system dynamics (photo-dynamical model) increases the precision of the TTV measurements and helps constrain the system architecture. We exemplify the advantages of applying this photo-dynamical model to a multi-planetary system found in K2 data very close to 3:2 mean motion resonance, K2-19. In this case the period of the larger TTV variations (libration period) is much longer (>1.5 years) than the duration of the K2 observations (80 days). However, our method allows to detect the short period TTVs produced by the orbital conjunctions between the planets that in turn permits to uniquely characterise the system. Therefore, our method can be used to constrain the masses of near-resonant systems even when the full libration curve is not observed.

In March, 1946, the writers reported in Scientific Agriculture (1) that benzene hexachloride showed pronounced fumigant action and that air currents as slow as 2 m.p.h. lowered its effectiveness against insects to a marked extent. The present paper deals with further experiments with benzene hexachloride and gives preliminary data on the fumigant action and effect of air currents on three other chlorinated hydrocarbons, viz., DDT, Hercules Toxicant 3956 (a chlorinated terpene) and Velsicol 1068 (a mixture of isomers with the empirical formul C10 H6 Cl8).

Diversity within Shigella dysenteriae (n=40) and Shigella boydii (n=30) isolates from children living in Egypt aged <5 years was investigated. Shigella-associated diarrhoea occurred mainly in summer months and in children aged <3 years, it commonly presented with vomiting and fever. Serotypes 7 (30%), 2 (28%), and 3 (23%) accounted for most of S. dysenteriae isolates; 50% of S. boydii isolates were serotype 2. S. dysenteriae and S. boydii isolates were often resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline (42%, 17%, respectively), although resistance varied among serotypes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis separated the isolates into distinct clusters correlating with species and serotype. Genetic differences in trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and β-lactam-encoding resistance genes were also evident. S. dysenteriae and S. boydii are genetically diverse pathogens in Egypt; the high level of multidrug resistance associated with both pathogens and resistance to the most available inexpensive antibiotics underlines the importance of continuing surveillance.

Sea water collected at Station E1, surface, between June 1948, and November 1949, contained suspended matter from 2·77 to 0·45 g./m.3 (or parts per million) dried and ignited. A few determinations of insoluble organic matter gave 1·77 to 1·15 parts per million dry weight at 100° C. The ignited residue contained from 55 to 17% silica, 28 to 3 of ferric oxide, 20 to under 1 of alumina and 70 (or excluding one high value 29) to 9 calcium carbonate. There was nothing in the records for temperature or salinity to suggest that the water mass had changed during the period of sampling.
The analyses reveal an unsuspectedly large amount of iron, compared with that found in solution. The ignited residue is rich in silicate, judging from the silica alumina ratio, but it is quite doubtful whether the additional supply of silicate available for diatoms is at all adequate to balance their requirements calculated on a phosphate utilization basis. It seems more probable that a considerable amount of the phosphate is available for non-siliceous phytoplankton.

A method of preparation of the whole bodies of pigs, suitable for the analyses of their mineral contents, has been described. Two litters of pigs were slaughtered at birth and another two at 8 weeks of age and each pig was analysed for whole body content, of Ca, P, Mg, Na, K and Cl. From another litter of pigs a gilt and castrated male were slaughtered at 23, 41, 54 and 90 kg live weight and their bodies analysed for the same elements. The data were used to derive a series of regression equations relating mineral contents to empty body weight for pigs at birth, 8 weeks of age and from 23 kg to 90 kg live weight. The regression coefficients, which provide a measure of the amount of a particular mineral retained in g/kg increase in empty body weight were, for pigs at birth Ca, 7·9; P, 6·3; Mg, 0·3; Na, 1·5; K, 1·9; Cl, 4·8; for pigs at eight weeks of age, Ca, 13·3; P, 7·4; Mg, 0·5; Na, 1·6; K, 2·3; Cl, 1·7; and for pigs from 23–90 kg live weight Mg, 0·4; Na, 1·3; K, 2·0; Cl, 1·1. For the older pigs Ca and P retentions (g/kg increase in empty body weight) ranged from 13·5 (Ca) and 7·6 (P) at 23 kg empty body weight to 4·3 (Ca) and 1·0 (P) at 90 kg empty body weight.

The effects of different rates of N fertilizer (0–180 kg N/ha) were tested on the growth, yield and processing quality of sugarbeet in 34 field experiments in England between 1986 and 1988. The experiments were performed using soil types, locations and management systems that were representative of the commercial beet crop in the UK. The responses obtained showed that current recommendations for N fertilizer use are broadly correct, but large differences occurred on some soil types, in some years, between the recommended amounts and the experimentally determined optima for yield. The divergence was largest when organic manures had been applied in the autumn before the beet crop. Calculations using a simple nitrate-leaching model showed that much of the N in the manures was likely to be leached, the extent of leaching being much less if the manure application was delayed until spring. In these circumstances, spring measurement of inorganic mineral N in the soil could improve fertilizer recommendations. In situations where higher than optimum rates of fertilizer N were used, the extra N had little effect on yield. Increasing the rate from 0 to 180 kg N/ha increased the amount of nitrate left in the soil at harvest by only 8 kg N/ha. The amount of inorganic N released into the soil from crop residues at harvest increased by 50 kg N/ha with N application rate, and the fate of this N has not been established.

1. Fifty-two experiments were made with two Cheviot and two Blackface wether sheep in which heat production and heat emission were determined at environmental temperatures of 8, 20 and 32° C. Initially the sheep were closely clipped to within 1–2 mm. of the skin and the fleece was then allowed to grow throughout the experiments.
2. At 32° C. fleece length had no effect on heat production. At 20° C. metabolism was elevated until fleece length exceeded 18 mm. At 8° C. metabolism was elevated until the fleece length exceeded 35–40 mm. No differences were found between the two breeds in their heat production at a particular temperature provided fleece length was identical.
3. The sensible loss of heat divided by the temperature gradient from the rectum to the environment (conductance) was linearly related to the logarithm of fleece length, both at environmental temperatures above and below the critical temperature.
4. No differences between the two breeds or between them and Down Cross sheep were found with respect to their conductances when devoid of fleece. The insulation provided by unit length of fleece was the same in all three breeds and crosses. The fleece of the Blackfaces grew at twice the rate of that of the Cheviots so that at a given time after shearing, the Blackfaces were more resistant to concold.
5. Studies of the losses of heat by the vaporization of water and of skin and fleece surface temperatures also showed no differences between breeds.
6. Analysis of the relation between heat concold, ductance and fleece length suggests that vasoconstriction and vasodilation border on all-or-none effects.
